Can I cross a border, take a ferry, or drive on restricted roads?

Travel only where the rental company has expressly permitted the vehicle to go.

Travel only where the rental company has expressly allowed the vehicle to go. Get written permission before crossing a border, boarding a ferry, or using any road type that may be restricted.

Check the rules for your rental company: Each rental company sets its own requirements. Before booking, open Rental Policies for the selected offer. After booking, check the latest voucher. After pickup, follow the signed rental agreement. Some Airport Van Rental screens call the rental company the supplier.

Get permission before the trip

Check the selected offer’s Rental Policies before booking. Ask about every country, state, province, island, ferry route, toll region, and road type in your planned journey.

The rental company may require:

  • Written authorization

  • Additional documents

  • A cross-border or ferry charge

  • A specific protection product

  • A different vehicle category

  • A route that remains within an approved area

Some destinations, vehicle types, or travel methods may not be permitted at all.

After pickup, the signed agreement controls

Before changing your route, contact the rental company using the number on the signed rental agreement. Do not cross the boundary or board the ferry until the rental company confirms the change in writing.

Carry the authorization and any required documents in the vehicle.

Treat road restrictions as safety rules

The agreement may prohibit travel on unpaved roads, beaches, flooded roads, off-road areas, closed roads, or other named locations. A route shown by a navigation app does not make it safe or permitted.

Obey road closures and instructions from local authorities. If conditions become unsafe, stop in a safe place and contact the rental company.

Why written approval matters

Travel outside the permitted area may breach the rental agreement. It may also affect roadside assistance, protection, vehicle recovery, or amounts charged by the rental company.

Evidence checklist

  • Rental Policies saved before booking

  • Voucher

  • Signed rental agreement

  • Rental company’s written permission

  • Receipt for any approved travel charge

  • Messages describing a route change

Still need help?

Contact the rental company for permission and vehicle-use rules. Airport Van Rental can help locate the Rental Policies or voucher and can escalate a booking-information discrepancy. RentalCover controls questions about its own policy; its answer does not replace the rental company’s permission.
