What is the difference between the security deposit, excess or deductible, and protection?

These are separate parts of the rental, controlled by different documents and companies.

The security deposit, excess or deductible, rental company waiver, and RentalCover protection are different. One amount does not automatically replace, remove, or cap the others.

Check the rules for your rental company: Each rental company sets its own requirements. Before booking, open Rental Policies for the selected offer. After booking, check the latest voucher. After pickup, follow the signed rental agreement. Some Airport Van Rental screens call the rental company the supplier.

Security deposit

The security deposit is a rental company-controlled card authorization or other deposit method stated for the booking. It secures obligations under the rental agreement and is not the price of protection.

The deposit amount is not automatically the most you could be responsible for under the signed agreement.

Excess or deductible

The excess or deductible is an amount of potential responsibility described in the rental company's rental terms. The amount, events, limits, and exclusions depend on the exact agreement and any rental company product you accept.

Do not use the security-deposit amount as a substitute for the stated excess or deductible.

Rental company waiver or protection

A rental company may offer a waiver or protection product that changes contractual responsibility under its rental agreement. Read the product name, price, limits, exclusions, and effect on the deposit before accepting it.

Ask the rental company to show every accepted product on the rental agreement.

RentalCover protection

Example Price Summary showing Collision Damage Coverage as a separate line item and amount due today.

When protection is selected, it appears as a separate Price Summary line. Example only; your offer and amount may differ.

Protection products, coverage, exclusions, prices, taxes, and availability vary by offer. Read the terms for the protection shown with your booking.

RentalCover protection is a separate third-party product with its own policy wording and claims process. The RentalCover policy wording controls coverage and claim eligibility.

Buying RentalCover protection does not by itself change the rental company's card, security-deposit, or rental-agreement requirements. Depending on the policy, a customer may need to pay a rental company amount first and submit a claim to RentalCover; only the policy wording can confirm how a claim is handled.

Which document controls?

  • Before booking, use the selected offer's Rental Policies for rental company requirements.

  • After confirmation and before pickup, use the voucher.

  • After pickup, the signed rental-company agreement controls the rental and rental company charges.

  • For RentalCover coverage and claims, the RentalCover policy wording controls.

If a document is blank, uses a different product name, or conflicts with another screen, ask for clarification before booking or signing.

Questions to ask before accepting protection

  1. Who provides the product: the rental company or RentalCover?

  2. What exact event, limit, and exclusion does the written document describe?

  3. Does the rental company change the deposit when this product is accepted?

  4. Is a claim handled directly by the rental company or submitted separately to RentalCover?

  5. Which documents must you keep if something happens?

Keep the voucher, policy wording, signed rental agreement, condition report, final invoice, receipts, and incident evidence.
